Overview
Community health has long been, and will increasingly be, a crucial pillar of universal health coverage, health equity, and sustainable healthcare systems. In the context of global aging, urbanization, and digital transformation, how to advance the integration of medical and elderly care, the coordination between medical services and disease prevention, and the digital and intelligent transformation of community health systems has become a central issue in global health. These are also core concerns of the School of Public Health at Fudan University and the Shanghai Institute of Major Infectious Diseases and Biosafety. Minhang District in China has rich experience in community health and primary healthcare.
As early as the 1980s, it pioneered three highly effective models: cooperative medical services, a three-tier medical and preventive care network, and the barefoot doctor system. Over the past four decades, these models have evolved: cooperative care laid the foundation for universal health insurance; the three-tier system has been strengthened by digital infrastructure; and the barefoot doctor model has developed into today’s family doctor system. As a result, population health has significantly improved, and life expectancy in the district now exceeds 84 years, among the highest globally. Minhang stands as a model for the development of China’s community health system.
This forum offers a platform for a brainstorming exchange between health policy researchers and practitioners, and invites community health leaders from Minhang—including representatives from government, hospitals, public health institutions, and universities—alongside international organizations and colleagues from the University of Geneva. Together, they will explore China’s experiences and global insights on medical-prevention integration, medical-elderly care integration, and digital transformation in community health.
Through this event, we hope to promote international cooperation and exchange in the field of community health, and contribute to the advancement of global health and the building of a shared future for all.
