Description

Introduction: Indoor residual spraying (IRS) and the use of long-lasting insecticide nets (LLINs) have been recommended by the World Health Organization as a major strategy for vector control in endemic populations. However, funding for this vector control programmes needs to be investigated to determine gaps and deficiencies. Therefore, this study analyzed the trends of global health financing on IRS and LLINs in the control of malaria vectors globally. Methods: Data for this study was extracted from the Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) database. This provided information on the channels of sources for financing of malaria elimination; data on funding for IRS and LLINS was extracted. The sources of fundings for IRS and LLINs from 1990 - 2021 were analyzed using the descriptive statistics tools Results: In 2021, $94 million and $160 million were spent on indoor residual spending and LLINs respectively. Data on health financing for IRS isn’t available for 1990 - 2002, however in 2003, $1.8 million was contributed to IRS. The top financiers of IRS for malaria control for the 32 years studied are the United States of America, $49 million (52.1%) and Global Fund, $36 million (38.3%). Similarly, the top financiers of LLINs for the study period are Global Fund, $77 million (48.1%) and United States, $49 million (30.6%). Conclusion: More studies need to be conducted to assess the cost effectiveness along with distribution of the funds in endemic countries.
