Oral presentation Health and the environment, time for solutions

Description

This presentation will dive into how the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)’s digital health solutions contributed to increasing resilience of health systems affected by conflict and explore the parallels with increasing resilience to climate change pressures. The pressures of low connectivity, robustness of infrastructure to potential explosions, and data security draw parallels with future pressures that will be exerted by climate change. This presentation will also explore how the ICRC’s approach to developing digital solutions for health are linked to climate change considerations and integrated in our work through partnerships to leverage domain expertise and generate faster and wider impact. Several practical examples will be presented to illustrate including:
- The Digital Center Management System was deployed in Gaza to provide end to end digitalization of physical rehabilitation centers. We will be presenting how this innovation, a first dedicated to disabled populations, could provide continuity of care for internally displaced people
- Through our collaboration with EPFL, the latest developments in GPT technology and LLMs were applied to develop Meditron and provide support for the collection of digital health solutions at ICRC as well as to ease access to ICRC Health guidelines. This considered the carbon emission of different algorithmic approaches which drove changes to make it more carbon efficient and ICRC more climate aware.
- Another area will be to explore how our use of telemedicine has decreased the global carbon footprint of health activities at ICRC. This is also the first open source telehealth end to end solution that can be put to use by the global humanitarian and global development community.
In conclusion, the presentation will be a call for action to recognize that solutions to tackle the impact of health activities in climate change exist and inviting others to act now.
