Description
The « Smart Diabtes Education » project introduces a novel approach to therapeutic patient education (TPE) for diabetes management in Mauritius. With 20% of the population suffering from type 2 diabetes and an additional 16% being pre-diabetic, the need for effective secondary and tertiary prevention strategies is of utmost importance. In this context, our project aims to address a significant gap in TPE, particularly in the sub-Saharan region. The main objective of the project is to promote TPE in Mauritius through the deployment of a health education program known as the Learning Nest supported by a mobile application. This application is designed to complement initial face-to-face TPE sessions, providing ongoing support and empowerment to participants. Our projects integrates the biomedical and psychosocial dimensions of health, which takes into account the benefits of socio-constructivism and empowerment in particular context. In terms of methodology; we are confronting quantitative data collected with qualitative data (observations, interviews), which will enable a thorough analysis of the educational content and its assimilation by the participants (n=100) who are type diabetic patients. We aim to demonstrate how the integration of educational intervention with mobile application support can enhance TPE’s effectiveness, particularly in the day-to-day management of diabetes. Our findings are expected to offer valuable insights into the role of digital tools in health education and their potential to transform TPE, especially in regions where such initiatives are still underdeveloped.
