Description
Like most developing countries, Nigeria is grappling with a substantial waste management challenge, generating more than 34 million
metric tons of waste annually, including 20 billion PET bottles, of which less than 10 percent is effectively collected and recycled due to infrastructure limitations and limited public awareness. This
inadequacy not only affects sanitation but also poses severe threats to public health and the environment, particularly terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Most times due to poor recycling behavior, awareness and incentive to reduce plastics end up in landfill or drainages clogging water water ways which become a breeding ground for mosquitoes a strong vector for malaria that affects alot of people pushing them into unplanned medical expense. in addition, Nigeria faces issues related to
widespread poverty, an underfunded healthcare system with less than three percent of its 200 million population having health insurance, leading to limited access to quality healthcare services,
especially among women, resulting in high maternal mortality rates.
SoSo Care is a pioneering player in the micro mobile health insurance sector, aiming to enhance health insurance accessibility while promoting environmental sustainability. At SOSO CARE we utilize recyclable materials to cover health insurance policy premium to enable care access across 3000 hospitals and pharmacies nationwide. By linking recycables to healthcare we are addressing both affordability and ecological concerns.
Our Theory of Change
Health is central to community well-being as well as to personal and national welfare. Research shows that health has a strong influence on people’s earning capacity and productivity. It affects educational performance and thus determines employment prospects. Soso Care was created with the ambition of achieving access to healthcare for everyone, irrespective of social economic status.
Through our waste-for-health service, Soso Care aims at producing 3 main outcomes:
1. People from underserved communities Benefit from an alternative way of financing their healthcare by using recyclable wastes as a medium to finance their healthcare cover
2. Adhere to habits that enable them to sustain good health conditions such as regular medical check-up visits or avoiding self-medication
3. Live in cleaner and safer conditions as more wastes are being collected from their environment which improves sanitary conditions
By linking waste collection to healthcare access, we are killing 2 birds with 1 stone as the solution addresses the needs through the following:
- Our users access insurance cover to access inpatient and out patient care valued at $1000, including antenatal and minor surgeries. Access to healthcare will reduce infant and maternal mortality in these regions and reduce indebtedness for out of pocket expenses.
- Recyclable waste collection Improves sanitation in slums and helps protect the environment and the oceans where plastic waste is ultimately dumped.
- Decentralized recycling creates job opportunities and sources of revenue for Mom and Pop stores.
- micro insurance provides financial safety.
- In 5 years our primary goal is to bring millions of people into insurance fold to finance with cash as well as drive behavior change on recycling.
