Description
Introduction – Objectives:
This poster presentation seeks to explore the intersectionality of climate change and eye health, aligning with the Geneva Health Forum's theme "Health and Environment: A Time for Solutions." The primary objective is to highlight the impact of environmental factors on eye health and present innovative strategies to enhance sustainability within eye care practices.
Methodology:
Our research draws from a comprehensive literature review, synthesizing existing data on the influence of climate change on eye health. Methodologically, the study encompasses an analysis of key environmental determinants such as pollution, climate-related disasters, and ecosystem disruptions. Additionally, it delves into the broader concept of sustainability within the eye care sector, exploring innovative practices and interventions.
Results and Discussions:
The findings underscore the direct and indirect consequences of environmental degradation on eye health. Pollution emerges as a contributor to various eye diseases, while climate change poses threats through natural disasters impacting eye care infrastructure. Human interference with ecosystems is identified as a potential source of ocular epidemics and antibiotic resistance. The study also highlights the environmental footprint of eye care systems, emphasizing the need for sustainable practices.
Innovative aspects of the research include proposed solutions for sustainable eye care, such as eco-friendly clinical practices, resilient healthcare infrastructure, and community engagement. By emphasizing the interconnectedness of eye health and the environment, the study advocates for a holistic approach to vision care that aligns with broader environmental sustainability goals.
Conclusions:
The poster concludes by emphasizing the urgency of integrating sustainability practices within eye care to mitigate the adverse effects of environmental changes. By recognizing eye health as a common good, we advocate for collective efforts to address the climate-health nexus and promote resilient, eco-friendly eye care systems.
Recommendations:
Integrate eco-friendly practices within eye care clinics and facilities.
Develop and implement policies to enhance the sustainability of eye care infrastructure.
Promote community awareness and engagement in sustainable eye health practices.
Advocate for research initiatives that explore the environmental impact of eye care systems.
Collaborate with stakeholders to create a sustainable framework for eye health at local and global levels.
This presentation contributes to the Geneva Health Forum's commitment to amplifying voices and implementing tangible solutions. It encourages a paradigm shift towards sustainable eye care practices that align with broader environmental health objectives.
