Oral presentation or scientific poster Towards the elimination of malaria

Description

Nepal is primarily a low malaria endemic country which has surpassed the target of Millennium Development Goal by dropping malaria morbidity and mortality rates by more than 50% in 2010 as compared to 2000. The Government of Nepal has outlined a vision for a Malaria-free Nepal within the framework of the National Malaria Strategic Plan (NMSP) for 2014-2025, developed based on 2012 micro-stratification of malaria epidemiology. The primary goal of NMSP is to realize a "Malaria Free Nepal by 2025."The burden of diseases is in decreasing trend, but the slower rate of decreasing indications is a big challenge for malaria elimination. The total positive malaria cases rose from 377 in FY 2077/78 to 491 in FY 2078/79, comprising 38 indigenous cases and 453 imported cases. Although the trend of indigenous cases is declining, there is an upward trajectory in the number of imported cases.
A comprehensive approach with intersectoral coordination is essential. This entails the involvement of trained healthcare professionals, community engagement, periodic indoor residual spraying, preventive measures, and ongoing monitoring and evaluation. Additionally, the malaria control strategy should endorse innovative approaches for prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, collaborating closely with various socio-political entities to achieve its objectives.
