Description
Introduction:
The global increase in forced displacement necessitates a critical evaluation of innovative interventions aimed at promoting the health and well-being of refugees and migrants as these demographics are posed with unique health challenges. As such, this systematic review synthesizes existing evidence to assess the effectiveness of health promotion innovations targeted at refugee and migrant populations.
Methods:
A systematic literature search was conducted across multiple databases, including PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar and Cochrane Library, to identify relevant studies published in English from 2019 to 2023. The inclusion criteria focused on empirical studies assessing the impact of innovative health promotion interventions for refugees and migrants. Methodological quality was evaluated using established criteria, and data extraction included details on intervention characteristics, study design, and health outcomes.
Results and Discussion:
The initial search yielded a total of 469 literatures, of which 25 met the inclusion criteria. The selected studies encompass a varied range of interventions, including culturally sensitive healthcare delivery models, technology-assisted health promotion programs, psychosocial support initiatives, and policy innovations targeting social determinants of health. Methodologically, the majority of studies employed quasi-experimental designs or observational methods, with varying levels of rigor. Synthesizing the findings reveals notable trends and gaps in the current evidence base. While some interventions demonstrate positive impacts on health outcomes, there is considerable heterogeneity in study designs and outcome measures. Challenges in generalizability and scalability of certain innovations underscore the need for a nuanced understanding of contextual factors influencing their effectiveness.
Conclusion:
This systematic review provides a comprehensive evaluation of innovations in health promotion for refugees and migrants, highlighting both successful strategies and areas requiring further research. The synthesis of evidence aims to inform policymakers, practitioners, and researchers about the state of knowledge in this field, offering insights into effective approaches and identifying avenues for future research and intervention development. Ultimately, the goal is to contribute to evidence-based practices that enhance the health and well-being of diverse refugee and migrant populations worldwide.
