Description

Health issues remain one of the biggest challenges confronting humanity. Apart from the ones like HIV/AIDS and smoking related diseases, malaria is another major cause of death, especially in Africa. Sub-Saharan Africa is responsible for almost 90% of the total deaths. Pregnant women and children under the age of 5 constitute the major victims of malaria disease. In some quarters, it has been suggested that proper exposure to, and adoption of right health lifestyle through paid media communications can help reduce, if not totally eradicate, the risk of malaria disease among pregnant women and children under the age of 5. Therefore, this study aims at examining exposure of pregnant women and children under the age of 5 to paid media communications on malaria prevention in Egbeda Local Government of Oyo State. Four research questions will guide this research. The study will also be premised on two theories, agenda setting theory and diffusion of innovations theory. For this study, a descriptive survey research design will be adopted. Using the Taro Yamani’s formula, a sample size of 396 pregnant women premised on the 2016-2020 population figures. The Questionnaire and interview guide will be the major instruments of data collection. In analyzing the data, a descriptive statistics method will be adopted. Findings from the study it is hoped will reveal that awareness and knowledge-based on the control and prevention of malaria among pregnant women through the paid media would be high, that radio is also hoped to be the mostly used means of information source on malaria prevention and control, that the information gathered by the pregnant women, it is also hoped, will have great influence on the prevention and control of malaria, that respondents through this study, receive useful information on malaria prevention and control through the paid media, that the respondents through the information sourced through the paid media, will lead to the adoption of use of the Long Lasting Insecticide Treated mosquito nets for prevention of malaria disease.
