Oral presentation Health and the environment, time for solutions

Description

Introduction-Objectives
Climate change is a major global concern, and it has significant consequences for both the environment and human health. Hospitals are vital to society, but they also contribute to environmental degradation through their energy and water consumption as well as waste production. In response to this problem, there has been a global call for the establishment of green hospitals. These hospitals are designed to minimize the harmful environmental impact of non-green hospitals, and they often use sustainable practices such as energy efficiency and water conservation.
In Egypt, there has been a growing interest in green hospitals. The Sharm el-Sheikh International Hospital is one example of a hospital that has committed to sustainable practices. The hospital has implemented several measures to reduce its environmental impact, such as using solar energy and water conservation. Despite these positive steps, there are still challenges to the adoption of green hospitals. Some people argue that green hospitals are not as effective as non-green hospitals. This study addresses this contention by examining the performance of two green hospitals and two non-green hospitals in Egypt. The previous studies found that the green hospitals were just as effective as the non-green hospitals in terms of patient and staff satisfaction. The studies also found that the green hospitals were more financially efficient than the traditional hospitals. This study will provide evidence that the performance of green hospitals can be just as effective as the performance of traditional hospitals. This information can encourage more hospitals to adopt sustainable practices. By reducing their environmental impact, hospitals can help to protect the environment and improve human health.

Methodology
A comparative study will be conducted in Egypt to assess the performance of two green and two non-green hospitals through a three-step process, employing various data collection techniques, including primary and secondary methods. The initial step involves reviewing the strategies, policies, and procedures of each green hospital to ensure alignment with green concepts. Subsequently, staff interviews and questionnaires will be administered to 350 respondents across different departments in each green hospital to verify the practical implementation of green standards. The final step focuses on defining thirteen indicators, such as average length of stay, mortality rate, morbidity rate, percentage of hospital-acquired infections, percentage of canceled surgeries, and percentage of patient satisfaction, to measure and compare the performance of green hospitals with non-green counterparts of similar scope and capacity, considering potential influencing factors.

Results and Discussions
The expected results will contradict the claim that the performance of green hospitals will be less effective than that of non-green hospitals. Therefore, this study will contribute to encouraging the health sector to take serious steps to transform into green health facilities.
