Description

Community health workers can be critical in low-resource humanitarian health systems. Yet the knowledge and skills of community health workers are often limited and need to be adapted to the rapidly emerging needs and the evolving health and humanitarian agenda. The University of Geneva (UNIGE) and InZone created the first COS (Certificate of Open Studies, 12 ECTS credits) on "Advanced Community Health Course: Designed for Refugees and People on the Move". The COS was launched in September 2023 and runs until June 2024 with three parallel cohorts in refugee camps in Kakuma (Kenya), Diffa (Niger) and Azaq (Jordan), including a total of 76 participants. The COS includes 12 modules co-designed and co-developed with 40 experts and practitioners from 10 academic and non-academic institutions, covering the pillars of community health training (e.g., maternal and child health, infectious diseases) and other innovative content (e.g., One Health and Planetary health, digital health, NCDs and mental health) and approaches (e.g., participatory visual methods). The COS uses a blended learning model combining online learning and practical workshops with local NGOs (e.g., International Rescue Committee). This COS is the first at the UNIGE and in the domain, offering exciting opportunities to keep improving, adapting and innovating in community health training in humanitarian settings. Translations of the COS to French and Arabic are ongoing, and there is potential deployment in 2024 in other sites in Sub-Saharan Africa and Central Asia in collaboration with local partners.
