Description

Postpartum depression (PPD) is one of the important public health problems that affect women after childbirth. But most of the time it goes underdiagnosed and overlooked which affects not only mother but also the interpersonal relationships. when comes to primiparous women the transition to motherhood is a process of undergoing physical and biological changes for the first time. It is a complicated and stress full process. They lack the experience of child caring which makes post-partum a very challenging phase. Evidences suggest that PPD affects first time mother more deleteriously compared to multiparous women.
Approximately 21% of women experience PPD after child birth. Among these 60% women are low-income women or teens. There is 17% higher prevalence in middle east and Asia compared to western countries.
Asia is the largest continent in the world by both land and population, containing 4.6 billion people. This comprise of regions namely central Asia, East Asia, South east Asia and west Asia. These regions vary in cultural practices, socioeconomic settings, religious rituals and varying status of mental health that affect mother in the postpartum period. A literature review on 40 countries around the world shows that the prevalence of PPD in Asia ranges from 11% to 60.8%.
The aim of this study is to get a complete comprehensive overview of PPD among primiparous women in Asia through a systematic review. Mental health illness is commonly underdiagnosed or overlooked throughout pregnancy and post-partum period. The influence of parity in the postpartum period is poorly studied. This study helps to close the void by presenting an updated literature of PPD among primiparous women for maternal mental health prioritization through a systemic and evidence-based data.
There is a little literature available on association between primiparous women and PPD.
Proper intervention is in need as poor maternal mental health has long term adverse effect on child, mother herself and the family.
PPD is a common mental health problem which affects women after child birth. Primiparity is considered as a significant risk factor for PPD. The prevalence of PPD among Primiparous women in Asia is high, and it should be effectively addressed.
