Objective: At least more than half percent of the population (56.2%) in Kyrgyzstan are overweight which evokes the country’s citizens obesity (23.1%). It is noted that this indicator in the republic is higher for women (21,4%) than for men (16,4%). The study aimed to provide data on obesity status for reference which helps to improve prevention and response.
Methods: The study conducted a population-based
survey between 2019 and 2021 using multi-stage random sampling as part of a national survey. Consequences of obesity evokes Non communicable Diseases (NDCs). We assessed prevalence, awareness, treatment and control rates of obesity by rural and urban regions, by gender and by children, and related factors including agent prescription patterns.
Results: Population’s knowledge and behaviour improved in intervention areas compared to control areas. Knowledge on obesity related risks increased from 60% to 80%. Behaviour improved with physical activity decreasing from 16.7% to 10.2%; smokers reduced from 52% to 50%; alcohol consumption reduced from 6.1% to 3.9%.
Conclusion: This study recommends that the physical activity and treatment protocols are effective in improving healthy behaviour, thus potentially contributing to preventing NCDs.
