Introduction
Recent studies have proven that there is a huge mental burden on the people during political standoffs between countries, especially temporary residents. Can this be applied to the Indian students living in Canada during the India-Canada political conflict?
Context and Aim
The India-Canada conflict began on 18 September 2023, coincidentally, two weeks after the fall term started in many Canadian universities. While the conflict kept getting bigger, so did the turmoil faced by Indian temporary residents in Canada, especially students whose actions and income were restricted. This paper aims to study the mental turmoil amongst the Indian students living in Canada during this conflict.
Methods
A comprehensive literature review was done in databases Pubmed, APA PsycNet and Google Scholar. Seven research and two news articles were studied and applied to this situation.
Findings
The paper found that while efforts have been made by the government to reach out to the Indian students in Canada, not much attention was diverted to their mental turmoil. It resulted in higher mental burden on individuals, even more pronounced in newer students, which could have been alleviated by regular assessment, security interventions and more awareness of the issue and its impact. The government of India did make efforts to alleviate this stress by making surveys, making a website and installing a hotline.
Innovative contribution to policy
The study found that there is a small lacunae in policies that focus on the mental health of international students. More policies should be made that focus on increasing evaluations routines and security measures that can help in the mental well being of the local population.
